About Wairarapa SuperGrans

Wairarapa SuperGrans is a charitable not-for-profit trust funded by the Ministry of Social Development.

Its motto is:

Helping People Help Themselves

And its Mission:

Wairarapa SuperGrans helps to improve the life skills, work potential and wellbeing of Wairarapa people, especially those who are socially and/or economically disadvantaged.

Wairarapa SuperGrans began operating in March 1997 in the Carterton Community Centre.

The office is now based in the Wairarapa Community Centre at 41 Perry Street Masterton but we work all over Wairarapa. Wairarapa SuperGrans has been funded since 2008 via the Ministry of Social Development’s Sages programme.

SuperGrans is all about improving life skills. We mentor one-to-one in the clients’ home. The life skills are primarily around nutritious and low cost family cooking, growing food, shopping more economically, home routines, home repairs, budgeting, living sustainably – whatever best suits the person we are working alongside.

Working closely with the coordinator, our trained volunteers are people who have extensive life experience and skills which they wish to share. The volunteers are all police checked.  Ongoing training is offered.

SuperGrans Aotearoa is the national governing body for the seven affiliated SuperGrans trusts around New Zealand. These are in Dunedin, Lower Hutt, Levin, Palmerston North, Pahiatua, Wairarapa and Gisborne. SuperGrans Aotearoa supports and promotes the work done by the branches by lobbying on their behalf, keeping them informed of environmental changes, and guiding them in any way possible. Martha Kelly is the national co-ordinator, who brings wealth of business experience to SuperGrans.

A national executive meets monthly, and because the members are throughout New Zealand, these are held via skype. Twice a year, the executive gathers in Wellington.
